Genocide is defined in Article 2 of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (1948) as “any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: killing members of the group; causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; [and]forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.” This year marks the 102nd anniversary of the Armenian or “forgotten” genocide. Still unrecognized by the United States of America as a genocide, the Armenian diaspora suffers post-generational psychological effects of the genocide. After the Armenian Genocide, came the Holocaust. Where Hitler eerily said, “Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?” After the Holocaust, came the horrific events of the Rwandan genocide. Thereafter, the Cambodian and most recently the Bosnian genocide. Happening today, Darfur is struck with grief and destitution as a genocide commences as you read this description. Like Darfur, genocide is taking place in Syria, Burma, Mosul, and Yemen. The Armenian Student Association brings to Pepperdine’s campus the historical significance of genocide that pervades each of these cultures.
