FREE PAINT OUT SPONSORED BY THE ALLIED ARTISTS OF THE SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS
DECEMBER 8, KING GILLETTE RANCH VISITOR CENTER
26800 MULHOLLAND HIGHWAY, CALABASAS CA 91302
The Allied Artists of the Santa Monica Mountains and Seashore hosts FREE monthly paint-outs on the second Saturday of the month. Plein air paint-outs are a great way to meet other artists and discover new sites for inspiration. All plein air artists and art enthusiasts are welcome to participate, no membership required. Bring your own art supplies, water, lunch, sunscreen and repellent, hat and walking shoes. Rain cancels the paint-out.
Spared by the recent Woolsely and Hill fires that blackened nearly 100,000 acres of the Santa Monica Mountains, the 588 acre King Gillette Ranch is one of the most stunning locales in the Santa Monica Mountains. Located in the heart of the Malibu Creek watershed at the corner of Mulholland Highway and Las Virgenes Road it offers rare and unspoiled views of nearby mountains, stunning coast and live oak woodlands, and a stately eucalyptus lined entrance drive. Famous architect Wallace Neff, architect of California’s golden age, designed the main residence and stables for razor magnate King C. Gillette in the 1920’s. Painting opportunities include Gillette’s historic Spanish Colonial Revival style mansion and other structures that were part of the original landscape plan. These include a long tree-lined alleé and grand entry, a large pond, a formal courtyard and terrace, bridges, and lawns. The broad meadows and low ridgelines serve as a wildlife corridor in the geographic center of the Santa Monica Mountains range. Several sensitive species are present. Deer, coyotes, bobcats roam the grounds and raptors and other birds forage and nest among the plant communities of valley and coast live oak savannah, grassland, coastal sage scrub, chaparral, riparian woodland, and southern willow riparian vegetation. Oil painter Annie Hoffman will hold artist demonstration at 9AM. Allied Artists Board Meeting at 12 noon. Meet in the parking lot by the visitor’s center. Facilities. Parking Free.
